Cala Martina

Cala Martina

Cala Martina, like Cala Violina, is part of the Bandite di Scarlino Nature Reserve. The beach, not very wide, is divided by the promontory "Punta Francese". A small paradise with crystal clear water for all lovers of diving excursions. On the path that leads to the cove, the statue of Giuseppe Garibaldi recalls the moment when, pursued by the papal guards, he set sail for Porto Venere.

Pianosa

Pianosa

The island of Pianosa is one of the seven islands of the Tuscan Archipelago and differs from the others, both for its lithological nature, and for its almost total absence of reliefs. The flat nature of the island had meant that in antiquity it was called Planasia, then Pianosa in modern times. Inhabited since prehistoric times, Pianosa was then inhabited by the Romans. Dating back to this period there is a noteworthy early Christian underground cemetery, still today the subject of excavations by the Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archeology. About 700 burials are known, of which, according to the various scholars, many still to be discovered. Of notable importance is the Roman villa built between the 6th and 7th century AD attributed to the nephew of the emperor Augustus, Agrippa Posthumous. Today, the structure is partially preserved and known as "Villa di Agrippa", or more commonly called "Bagni di Agrippa", considered by all a precious treasure for its historical and architectural value. To increase the charm of this precious building is the place where it was built: the villa, in fact, rises on the east coast of the island in contact with the sea. In the Middle Ages, the island was long disputed between the two maritime republics of Pisa and Genoa and, after having been abandoned for a long time, in 1858 it was used as a penal colony. Only a few years ago it returned to hosting tourists. The evocative backdrops and the uncontaminated nature protected by the National Park of the Tuscan Archipelago offer the viewer a fascinating vision of this wonderful place.

Aquarium Mondo Marino

Aquarium Mondo Marino

The small aquarium, located a few kilometers from the town of Massa Marittima and about 30 km from Castiglione della Pescaia, is home to more than 150 different species of fish contained in more than 30 tanks divided into Mediterranean, Tropical and Atlantic, 2 tactile tanks and finally a tub containing the Black Fin Sharks. On reservation it is possible to visit the aquarium with a guide prepared to illustrate all the characteristics of each marine species present.

Massa Marittima

Massa Marittima

Massa Marittima, a small medieval jewel located in the hinterland, is about 40 km from Castiglione della Pescaia. To reach this small village, the journey winds through the wonderful Tuscan landscapes in the hills. The arrival will leave you breathless because you can enjoy an unparalleled view, a breathtaking view of the Gulf of Follonica and the beautiful Maremma countryside. The history of this small village dates back to the era of the silver and gold mines that made it famous. Between the XIII and XVI centuries, Massa Marittima saw its maximum splendor and in those years it developed from an artistic and monumental point of view. The Cathedral of San Cerbone, built between the 11th and 12th centuries, dominates Piazza Garibaldi and is the representative building of the city. Then there are a number of monuments that are worth a visit: the Palazzo del Podestà located on the splendid square next to the Cathedral, now home to the archaeological museum. The Conti Biserno building, the Palazzo Comunale and the Palazzo delle Logge, all splendid buildings that frame the evocative Piazza Garibaldi. Moving a few meters you can admire Piazzale Mazzini, where in the Palazzo delle Fonti building you can admire the famous fresco of abundance. Getting lost in the alleys that date back to the Città Nuova meet: the complex of San Pietro all'Orto, with the cloister of Sant 'Agostino, the Fortezza Senese that dominates the city from above and the Torre del Candeliere. The tower, once destroyed by the Sienese, has been rebuilt slightly lower. A decade later, the famous clock was added in the 13th century. In May and August, the town proposes the medieval day, bringing back the hands of time. "Il Balestro del Girifalco" presents its guests: the merry-go-rounds of flags with spectacular acrobatics, the competition between third parties, who with their crossbows challenge each other to target practice, leaving the spectators with bated breath. The historical processions, with the costumes made of fabrics in ancient colors that transport us to a distant time making us dream, and the dull echo of the drums and the trumpets in the background.

Oasi Diaccia Botrona – Bird Watching

Oasi Diaccia Botrona – Bird Watching

La Diaccia Botrona is a beautiful natural reserve on the outskirts of Castiglione della Pescaia, where uncontaminated nature is the undisputed sovereign. An oasis of silence, broken only by the sound of birds, guardians of the place, who with their singing accompany visitors in this setting with a unique atmosphere. The oasis, thanks to its still intact nature, boasts the reputation of being the most important oasis in Europe and has a rich flora characterized by reeds, rushes, willows, all typical of the aquatic landscape, but also by the domestic pine and bushes typical of the Mediterranean maquis. The Casa Ximenes, more commonly known as the Casa Rossa, reflects on the waters of the stream that crosses the oasis and stands alone in all its beauty and grandeur. The building was commissioned by Leopold I of Lorraine in 1765 to the architect Ximenes to attempt the reclamation of the marsh through the use of locks. In many times of the year it is possible to do bird-watching and admire the various species of ducks, teals, widgeons and cormorants, rare birds such as the great white heron, the splendid flamingo, the crane and the wild goose, the rare Falco of marshes and the bittern, who have chosen this place to nest.

Cala Violina

Cala Violina

An unmissable excursion, a magical and wild place, where you will be lulled by the sound of the crystalline sea, the singing of birds, surrounded by the typical Maremma nature. Leaving your car at the car park (for a fee with limited parking spaces and used only to visit the Cala), you will take the 2 km route (on foot or by bike) that will take you to this fabulous place, famous for its pleasant sound produced from the trampling on its sand with fine quartz grains, from which derives the name of this suggestive cove unique in its kind. Cala Violina, unquestionably one of the most beautiful beaches in Italy, is located on the stretch of coast between Punta Ala and Follonica opposite the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago, and can also be reached through a longer route, of about 6 km but with views breathtaking overlooking the sea, starting from the Marina di Scarlino.

Isola del Giglio

Isola del Giglio

The island of Giglio is a small rare gem in the Tuscan Archipelago. Its morphology is predominantly mountainous, consisting almost entirely of a granite block interspersed with inlets that host wonderful coves and beaches such as the Caldane, the Cannelle and the Arenella.
The landscape it offers is rather barren, made of vegetation and low bushes, and of the vine, from which the famous Ansonaco island wine is produced.
For those who want to get away from reality, the Isola del Giglio is a welcoming refuge, with its small villages of Giglio Porto, Giglio Castello and Giglio Campese, its warm hospitality, its good fish cuisine and its wild nature. It offers the possibility to admire the splendid seabed with scuba diving, but also to face climbing or trekking excursions, thanks to the rocky nature that lends itself well to this type of sport.
Highly recommended is the daily excursion by rubber boat (the famous taxi-boats) during which experienced island sailors, inhabitants and lovers of their places, will show you the Lily from another perspective, telling you about ancient stories and legends, of uses and costumes, of tradition, stopping when necessary to make you stop in the most suggestive and difficult to reach by land.

Castiglione della Pescaia

Castiglione della Pescaia

Castiglione della Pescaia rises among green hills in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma. It is a small medieval village and a charming seaside resort on the Tyrrhenian coast. Award-winning 5 blue Legambiente sails, it is one of the most sought after destinations thanks to its long white beaches, its clean and crystalline sea and its uncontaminated and wild nature, typical of this corner of Maremma where everything has remained genuine and rich in traditions . The historic center is a tangle of narrow alleys and perched houses overlooking the sea, a feast of colors and smells that smell of the past, a refuge for lovers, a place of reflection, an ancient jewel that however goes well with the panache and to the liveliness of the summer nightlife. Here typical restaurants, pubs, pubs and bars keep the evenings alive; and even cultural events, theme parties, outdoor cinema! Ultimately, Castiglione della Pescaia is a suitable place for an eclectic holiday, where sea, nature, culture, entertainment and good food will be the main ingredients of your well-being.
